Paris Agreement Signatories 2021

The Paris Agreement is an international treaty on climate change that was adopted by 196 countries at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015. Its aim is to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The Paris Agreement came into force on November 4, 2016, and as of 2021, 191 countries have signed and ratified it. The remaining five countries that have not yet signed and ratified the agreement are Iran, Iraq, Eritrea, Libya, and South Sudan.

The Paris Agreement signatories have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to regularly reporting their progress. Each signatory has submitted its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to the UN, outlining the actions they will take to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.

In 2021, the Paris Agreement signatories will meet for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic to discuss the progress of the agreement and to strengthen their climate actions. The meeting, called COP26, will be held in Glasgow, United Kingdom, in November 2021.

Some of the key countries and regions that have signed and ratified the Paris Agreement include:

1. China – China is the world`s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and it has committed to peak its emissions by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

2. United States – The U.S. rejoined the Paris Agreement in January 2021 after former President Trump withdrew the country from the agreement in 2017.

3. European Union – The EU has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

4. India – India is the world`s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and it has committed to reducing the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33-35% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.

5. Japan – Japan has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

6. Canada – Canada has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% below 2005 levels by 2030.

7. African Union – The African Union has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2063.

8. Latin America and the Caribbean – The countries in this region have committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 20-25% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels.

In conclusion, the Paris Agreement is an important international treaty that aims to limit global warming and to mitigate the effects of climate change. As of 2021, 191 countries have signed and ratified the agreement, and they have committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and to regularly reporting their progress. The upcoming COP26 meeting in Glasgow will provide an opportunity for the Paris Agreement signatories to discuss their progress and to strengthen their climate actions.
